Romeo Y Julieta

Named after Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo y Julieta cigars are some of the best-known—and best-selling—cigars in the world. The Romeo y Julieta cigar brand has had many devotees over the years, including famous politicians, celebrities, and other cigar aficionados—including us here at Deco Drive Cigars.

Founded by Inocencia Álvarez and Mannin Garcia in Cuba in 1875, the Romeo y Julieta brand was already winning awards at tasting exhibitions by 1885; and after José "Pepin" Rodríguez Fernández acquired the company in 1903, his promotional skills—and the quality of the cigars—made them a worldwide phenomenon. The cigars became especially popular among wealthy customers, for whom Rodríguez created Romeo y Julietas with personalized bands. Winston Churchill himself—perhaps the brand’s most eminent enthusiast—was known for his love of Romeo y Julieta cigars.

Not long after Rodríguez passed away in 1954, the tobacco industry in Cuba was nationalized, and Romeo y Julieta was transplanted from Cuba to the Dominican Republic. The Cuban government has continued to produce and distribute their version of the Romeo and Julieta cigar, but today the Dominican-made Romeo y Julieta lines distributed by Altadis SA in the United States are even more popular than their Cuban counterparts; in fact, they are some of the most popular cigars in America.

The primary reason that the Romeo y Julieta cigars have met with so much success is because of their deft craftsmanship and reputation for consistency. Their popularity is also due, however, simply to their sheer diversity—they are available in a broad range of blends that appeal to every sort of cigar smoker. From the Romeo y Julieta classic—a creamy, medium-bodied smoke with a unique aroma and short finish—to the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Maduro, which offers a medium- to full-bodied flavor with hints of spice and cedar, the variety of the lines offered by Romeo y Julieta is unendingly interesting and satisfying.

Perfect for any occasion, the Dominican version of this Cuban classic—and the many lines it has spurred into being—inarguably lives up to its impressive heritage. Romeo y Julieta cigars offer an exquisite experience to cigar smokers of every preference. Deco Drive Cigars invites you to sample a Romeo y Julieta; when you do, you’ll understand why even Churchill couldn’t get enough of these flavorful cigars.
