Cohiba

When Christopher Columbus visited what is now known as the Dominican Republic in 1496, he learned a word that even non-cigar smokers everywhere recognize today: “cohiba.” Then, it was the name that the Taino Indians native to the island had for the cured tobacco leaves they smoked; today, it’s the title of a cigar company of legendary status.

Originally created at the request of Fidel Castro himself after he took over as dictator, the Cohiba brand was developed to be the most high-quality Cuban cigar in existence. Initially available only to high-ranking government officials, Cohibas were gradually allowed to enter the mainstream cigar market in Cuba, and eventually their impeccable construction and remarkable flavor made them some of the most sought-after cigars there.

The Cohiba cigars we know today in America, also known as “red dot” Cohibas because of the red-centered “o” on the cigar label, are crafted in the Dominican Republic. Owned by General Cigar, this brand is separate from the Cuban Cohiba cigar that was released in 1968, and is the only Cohiba legally available in the United States. While the Cuban Cohibas have a sterling reputation of their own, these Dominican-made Cohibas are no second fiddle—cigar connoisseurs everywhere agree that they more than stack up to their competition.

The standard line of Dominican Cohibas feature filler leaves grown in the Dominican Republic’s Cibao and Northwestern regions, Jember binders grown in Indonesia, and dark wrappers grown in Cameroon, West Africa. They are prized for their rich, complex flavor, a characteristic that is owed to their unique blend of tobaccos and the careful aging process they undergo.

In keeping with its Cuban predecessor, the Dominican Cohiba is made with only the finest tobaccos, and made by only the most well-trained, skillful cigar rollers—which is why the Cohiba name continues to be synonymous with quality. Despite their superior caliber, however, Cohibas are also surprisingly affordable.

Well-rounded, smooth-smoking, and completely satisfying, “red dot” Cohibas have a formidable reputation—and they consistently live up to that reputation year after year. If you’ve ever wondered why you see the name “COHIBA” on so many vanity plates, give one of Deco Drive Cigars’ Cohibas a try; once you’ve experienced them, you won’t be wondering any longer.
